What Billionaire Elon Musk is Anxious About an AI Catastrophe

When a super-rich man who’s an engineer too points out that systems that are man’s own creation could and certainly shall go berserk in future as they develop high intelligence levels and end life on the whole earth’s surface , most people pay attention, even the scientist. If it’s still not clear to you “who is Elon Musk,” he’s the abovementioned genius inventor! Musk, whose approximate net worth as of July 207 as Forbes indicates is $16.1 billion, founded SpaceX, and he’s CEO of numerous companies and a business person. According to a Vanity Fair article, the billionaire is injecting billions of dollars into his crusade against an AI catastrophe he believes will happen.

Off late, Musk has acknowledged the haste in which artificial intelligence is being embrace by Silicon Valley, and he nervous about it. He won’t sit pretty and just wish the issue away–he’s working hard to impact the rapidly accelerating scientific field and its proponents so that to protect the world, particularly people, from authoritarian computers with the capacity to learn via AI.

It appears that a couple of Musk’s company purchases and his own creations have two main targets: to stay up-to-date with recent AI advancements and to develop appropriate remedies. A case in point is a while ago when Hassabis, who helped establish DeepMind, went to Musk’s SpaceX plant which makes rockets. A massive section of a rocket pass through in the sky as the two innovators were having a discussion at the canteen. Next, Musk made it clear that his major intention with SpaceX was the most important program to humanity: migration to other planets.

Hassabis responded that, actually, he was the one developing the most important program on the planet: artificial super-intelligence. Musk’s counter-response was that AI was a major factor behind the necessity for humans to migrate to Mars, guaranteeing the availability of a bolt-hole should AI run amok and start attacking humanity. Maybe Hassabis though it was funny before commenting that AI machines would simply pursue humans to Mars.

Musk started sounding the alarm bells on the likelihood of AI machines going berserk and out of human control three years ago. Maybe, nothing eased his apprehension when Shane Legg, a DeepMind partner, said point-blank that he thought human extinction was possible, and technology would likely have a role in it.

Musk was already an investor in DeepMind by the time Google bought the AI company in 2014. As he told a writer of a Vanity Fair article, Musk had gotten involved in DeepMind with the sole objective keeping a cautious eye on the trend that AI takes, rather than return on investment. To Elon Musk, that’s another approach to dictating AI trends.
